EATING DISORDER & AUTISM

INTRODUCTION
Eating Disorder is one of the most common symptoms prevalent among the children with autism. Parents frequently approach doctors with their children’s improper eating habits and eating difficulties. Researchers have found that 20- 30% eating disorders are prevalent among adults with autism and 3-10% in children with autism.
CHARACTERSTICS
Eating disorders can be anorexia, eating more rapidly, throwing up etc. Certain autistic traits may be heightening the cause of this disorder like rigidity in thinking, following fixed patterns, inflexible behavior, unusual sensory processing and stereotypical behaviors. Though there are no sufficient studies to claim whether autism increases the risk of eating disorder or whether the symptoms of eating disorder resembles autistic traits. Researchers also found out that difficulties with social communication and developing friendships, could contribute to higher levels of depression and anxiety from a very young age. The dysfunction of coping mechanisms with the emotional difficulties might be the cause of disordered eating.
SUGGESTION
Eating disorders can impact the overall health and well-being of the child/adult. This could also disrupt their sleep. Such symptoms of eating disorders need to be identified and treated by a medical practitioner.
